Artist Statement
My work inhabits a shifting, liminal ground between disciplines and dimensions. Heavily informed by photogragphy, the majority of my current output is in printmaking and drawing, which may then be digitally combined with the original photographic images in ways that reject the traditional distinctions between organic and mechanical markmaking. Just as my output in two dimensions belies frontiers between disciplines, it also explores boundaries between two- and three- dimensional work, sometimes finding its expression in constructions assembled from photographs or in artist's books.
My theme is the point in place and time where man has interacted with the landscape - often over hundreds or thousands of years - and the sense of mystery and awe that the traces left behind evoke in the viewer. My most recent work has been an extended series of visual explorations into the Glencalvie Clearances.
Personal
My life has encompassed a variety of professional experiences; however, these have always related in some way to art, whether through personal practice or through teaching. Most recently I have fulfilled a lifelong ambition by becoming a student on the Fine Art degree course at the highly- regarded Loughborough University School of Art and Design. This has enabled me to pursue my enjoyment of learning and to develop my skills and understanding in the valuable context of peer appraisal whilst encountering for the first time the world of professional artist.
Personal interests include the natural world and historic sites - often reflected in my work. I am currently taking a year out of university to renovate my 100- year old cottage on the east coast of Sutherland, and to develop my studio practice in the environment that provides most of its subject matter.
