Artists Residency

TIMESPAN GRANTED MAJOR ARTS AWARD

In 2004, Timespan was awarded major funding from the Scottish Arts Council, Leader Plus and SNH towards an exciting two year arts programme. The project, which will involve up to six artists taking temporary residence in Sutherland, is designed to give local communities the opportunity to enjoy the rich relationship between the arts and local heritage.

The artists, who will stay for between eight to twelve weeks in either Helmsdale, Brora, Golspie or Skerray, will develop new work of their own, and with local groups and schools will develop ideas based on the rich heritage of their areas.  The residencies will vary in theme and focus, but each one will culminate in one or more of the following: a gallery exhibition, and exhibition of the groups work, or work outside the gallery, perhaps permanent, which will have special relevance to the community.

Penny Woodley, Chair of Timespan said "The Timespan Board is most grateful to the funders and those contributing in-kind support to this scheme. The Arts Residency Programme will have enormous local appeal and is a natural extension of Timespan’s gallery programme. We have a good track record of art outreach programmes with school age children and now we have a wonderful opportunity to build on this."

Amanda Catto, Head of Visual Arts for the Scottish Arts Council said "The residency programme at Timespan will offer new opportunities for people to meet and work with artists who are interested in exploring themes of cultural heritage within the unique environment of the area. We look forward to fresh perspectives, new ideas, and work which resonates with the context in which it is finally shown."
