Timespan’s gallery is the first purpose-built visual and applied contemporary art gallery in Sutherland, and in fact the most northerly on mainland Britain.

We show a diverse programme of local, national and international art and craft exhibitions and believe that our local community in Helmsdale and Sutherland should have access to the very best art right on their doorstep.

Our arts programme is committed to supporting artists working in current practice and to providing access for all to contemporary art and artists through residencies, exhibitions, temporary projects and participation. In 2009 we commissioned Jenny Brownrigg, Exhibitions Director at Glasgow School of Art, and Claudia Zeiske, Director of Deveron Arts, to write a curatorial research report to support our development of an ambitious, exciting and sustainable visual arts programme over the 2010-2013 period. This led us to develop our theme of ‘bridging’ the arts with the interests of the local community.

We have a developing reputation for providing a range of opportunities for artists to develop their practice often leading to presentations of new work in the gallery, project spaces, virtual space or in the landscape.  In many cases they work with members of our local and regional community in planning, and as contributors or delivery partners.

We also deliver a year round programme of education and outreach events in the venue, at schools, in the landscapes and various locations around Sutherland.
