Visual Arts Sutherland
June 2006
Visual Arts Sutherland – VASu - is a collective of contemporary artists living and working in Sutherland.
Their annual exhibition, running for the month of June in Timespan, Helmsdale is a wonderful show of work by many of the talented members of the group.
There are examples of painting, drawing, printing, sculpture, ceramics and textiles in an exhibition that is truly a delight. Within these disciplines there are works in oils, watercolours, etching and collagraph, metal and wood sculpture, hand built ceramics, weaving, tapestry weaving and felt making.

Also on display is an ‘Activity Box’ that has been put together by VASu artists for use by schools in Sutherland. Artists have put in an example of their work and a work sheet of instructions to help children produce a piece of their own using that artists technique.
Running concurrently with the exhibition is the Visual Arts Sutherland Open Studio Trail, when some of the members open their studios to the public. This is a great opportunity not just to see work but also to meet practising artists in their working environment. . One visitor at the opening said, “the diversity of work in this exhibition is astonishing and makes me want to go on the Trail”
