'TWO VIEWS'

An exhibition of Paintings and Textile Collage by Cyril and Hazel Reed.

Cyril's wonderfully luminous works depict the east coast of Sutherland. The textile collage work of Hazel deals with similar subjects in a more abstact way. If you love the landscape of East Sutherland or are a new visitor to the area this exhibition is a must.

Cyril and Hazel met at the University of Leeds Institute Of Education and both followed careers as teachers of Art and Design. After early retirement from teaching they moved north to Brora.

Cyril's work is usually developed from initial sketchbook studies supported by photographs. Sound drawing, as a means of recording and ordering information and ideas, is a discipline which has remained with him since art college days, though memory,as well as first hand experience of the subject, plays an important part. Finished pieces are almost always carried out at home, when more time and thought can be given to their development. Although Cyril's work is obviously representational, there are, nevertheless, abstract elements within the work. His work is collected by individuals both in the UK and abroad.

Hazel says 'My work is in several private collections in the UK and abroad. I currently live in Brora and teach Adult Education classes in painting, and run creative textile workshops and demonstrations. My training is in painting and calligraphy. My main interest now is in textiles. The inspiration for my work is taken from the environment, colour, texture and pattern playing an important part. I use a variety of materials, and techniques include fabric painting, machine and hand embroidery, dyeing, collage and weaving. The direction of individual pieces of work determines which combinations are used'.
