Good turnout for community talk!
Nearly 30 people turned out last Friday night to hear the latest developments about the Kildonan Clearances Trail (App). The trail route has been finalised and many of the historic sites have been chosen to feature in the trail.
Timespan has been working alongside the digital design specialists at Bluemungus, based in Edinburgh, who are developing the interactive Clearances trail. The trial will include:
- GPS route navigation
- 10 waymarked locations and site information
- historic map layers x 3
- 3-D longhouse illustrations
- audio and visual story of the Clearances
- Locations of all the townships and other sites of interest in Kildonan
- Oral history accounts x 6
- Emigrant’s Kist game
- Links page
- Sharing page
The Trail Route
The trail extends in length from the area around the village of Helmsdale and the Emigrants’ Monuments to the area around Kinbrace and cemetery. App users will be guided along the trail with the aid of GPS map navigation and audio instructions.
The additional guidance aid of wooden way markers positioned at the 10 trail locations will be necessary to ensure all users have a visual reference to show them that they have arrived at the desired position and can navigate around this location in any direction, i.e. east of way marker etc.
The app will contain multi-media content depicting various landmarks and points of interest at each of the ten locations and surrounding area.
School Involvement
Pupils from Helmsdale and Kinbrace primary schools are keen to get involved and who better than these technological savvy kids to help test the app! The children will also be writing words that will appear on each of the 10 waymarkers. These words will evoke the feelings of the people who lived in Kildonan and who emigrated to Canada. The waymarkers will be made of Canadian Red Cedar in remembrance of Kildonan’s Canadian descendants.
Kildonan Clearances 2013
