Community Exhibition
THE GARTYMORE STORY
April – October
The Gartymore Story explores the history of crofting and the people who lived and worked in crofting communities on the east coast of Sutherland. The exhibition which is on display at Timespan brings together a wealth of historical research combined with an archaeological overview of the landscape. A local flavour has been created by incorporating a rich seam of information from the community of Gartymore, to produce a memorable and heart warming journey into the crofting way of life.
Learn about the crofter’s struggle for fair rents and land rights in a period of Highland history known as the Crofter’s War. This turbulent episode was no more evident than in Gartymore, where a number of courageous individuals lit the torch for political change and established the inaugural branch of the Land League Movement. Their victory was hard won and resulted in the Crofting Act of 1886. Many of the contents of this fascinating exhibition were bequeathed to Timespan by the Cuthbert brothers who lived together in Gartymore for many years and whose accumulated belongings and combined wisdom, paints a remarkable picture of the life of 20th century crofters in Sutherland.
