What's on

Timespan has a rolling programme of exhibitions and activities throughout the season. As the main art centre in Sutherland, we are committed to a minimum of three shows a year.

The gallery exhibitions are drawn mostly from Scotland and include prominent, sometimes internationally acclaimed painters, makers, sculptors and ceramicists. Most work in the gallery is for sale, although sometimes we host touring exhibitions which are for display only.

In the shop and café, we promote the Timespan Maker and Timespan Artist of the month. These are represented by artists from all over Scotland and the UK.

Timespan’s heritage programme includes talks and discussion groups organised by Jacquie Aitken, the museum’s archivist. These are open to both residents and visitors to Helmsdale. Timespan organises an annual community exhibition which is created through the dedicated research of local volunteers. We also provide space for visiting heritage exhibitions from time to time.

The Goldrush Tour

Scotland's first GPS guided tour in a remote place - take a short walk into history at the site of the 19c Goldrush with our new sound and visual computer guides. Please contact Timespan Reception for more information.

We hope you will be able to come and enjoy the new facilities. In the meantime please do visit the gallery and the gardens including the geology garden which was opened in 2006.

Talk at Timespan

Monday 19th May at 7.30pm

We are a group of four international glass artists participating in a 8 week kiln forming and casting residency program at North Lands Creative Glass Centre in Lybster.  As artists we all draw on a diverse range of techiques to communicate ideas through the medium of glass.

Each artist will give a brief background about their recent body of work and the development of their current investigations that have evolved throughout the residency. In our individual presentations we will explain the theoretical underpinning informing our ideas as well as the techniques and working process involved in the making of the work.

Joseph Cavalieri (New York, NY) will share images of hand painted portraits of the local peoples of Lybster, as well as new experimental 2-dimentional work.

Fabrizia Bazzo (Somerset UK) Fabrizia will talk about the transition from her figurative 2-dimensional stained glass to her more recent 3-dimensional work where she also makes use of various techniques taken from printmaking.

Lee Mathers (Sydney, Australia) work uses glass as a sculptural medium to explore ideas of memory and place. Lee will discuss her interest of how certain objects from ones past, particularly from the domestic environment can invoke a reminiscing of another time and place.

Lisa Cahill (Sydney, Australia) will show images of her minimalist landscape inspired wall panels before  showing images and discussing how she has begun investigating more sculptural forms and vessels with various new techniques while at Northlands.
